Misplaying Low Pocket Pairs

By P0ker H0

For the beginning player, I would have to say the most common mistake is either in bet sizing or misplaying low pocket pairs. I’d like to share with you why.

Early in tournaments, I am never folding a low pocket pair in early position if ...

Better yet, do you watch the table for a while to get a feel of how the players are playing? Do the stakes matter in your decision? Just curious....

In a low limit game or tournament where most players don't care about the outcome? How do you approach it?

Meaning, they'll call with subjective hands in bad spots just for the sake of getting it over with. Here's an example:

Pitbull Poker, $0.25 + $0.05 tournament. 32 Entrants. $10 prize pool.

We started with 500 chips. After 7 hands I'm up to 790 on a 6 person table. I'm sitting next to UTG with AQo, blinds are 15/30. UTG raises to 100. So there's already 145 chips in the pot, almost ...

Bluffing is what poker is renowned for - but how often do you bluff in reality?

Not reallly talking about semi-bluffs, where you have some type of hand but are trying to give the impression it's stronger than it is through a big bet.

I'm more thinking of betting big when you have nothing.

Say you have 9h4d pre-flop. You limp and the flop comes AsJc2s. It is checked to you and you bet.

You have no kind of hand or the prospect of it getting better but you make a pot size bet as a bluff.

When you are getting bad cards it doesn't seem to matter if you are on Tilt, UB, PS, PO, DR, or AP. If you are taking Bad Beats you get them everywhere. You can't catch a card or hit a set for hours on end. Nothing comes easy.

First of all, they don't tell you how many jokers there are. Just one? Two? Don't know even now... Second of all, the joker is not always wild! If you don't know this beforehand, you are going to lose money. Say you have Q,Q K,K and Joker. You have 2 pair, not a full house. I am in the US and I don't like to have my personal account information on the web so I buy VISA gift cards and use them to put money in my account. But so far this only works on FullTilt. I tried Pokerstars and Bodog on several occasions and the deposits were always declined. The failure may be due to the issuing institution though.
Most of you know by now that Eurolinx stopped allowing US players on their site. I was playing on that site quite a lot until all this transposed. Any players that were registered with Eurolinx before Jan. 1 2009 are still able to play there with no problem. I lost my hard drive a while ago and had another put in and had to redownload Eurolinx(and all other poker sites as well). Introduction to Money Management

It never fails. Inevitably, the first day of my lifeskills class on Money Management at Brookdale Community College somebody will ask me - What is Money Management? Instead of asking them why they signed up for a course about something unknown to them, I usually answer the question this way. In the broadest possible sense, money management is setting income against outflow and creating a budget. In some way we all deal with money. ...

One of the biggest and best lessons a player can learn is bankroll management, its the key to keep from going broke on your losing streaks and the key to make the best profit possible. The basic strategy i've learned is to never buy in to a cash game for more than 5-10% of your bankroll. Don't be afraid to drop down in limits. For MTT's use about 2% or less of your roll. Just a little of my 2 cents.

Two players call, three players fold.

I'm sitting on the button with QQ and raise to 575.

SB and BB fold.

Player UTG raises me all-in, the original callers fold.

With only half an hour in the tournament gone, sitting on the average stack size, what is the correct play?

I'll discuss what my play was, but I'd also like to hear the opinions of our valued members as well.

My play at the pot:

Is there a tape or CD of these games that I could watch straight thru at my own pace but still not miss an episode. There usually is only 2 or 3 parts on at a time and the next time it is on it starts some where else. Kind of frustrating.

I absolutely love these games now and find hold-em as boring as fu** now(pardon my french).

Due to the nature of these games,5 cards exposed 2 down, there is tons more information available to which make your decisions.
