Lynette Chan vs. The Big Donk

Post by The Big Donk on Tue May 05, 2009 12:41 pm

Last night my wife and I were playing in a MTT on Full Tilt with Lynette Chan and eighty-some-odd other players.

My wife went out in the first level when she was dealt AA. A player raised before her, and she answered by shoving all-in. The other player called with JJ, spiked a set, and won the hand.

I managed to stay in a bit longer myself, somehow dodging suckouts and winning with the best hand over and over again. I managed to build up a dominant chiplead at the table with a hefty chipstack over 9,000 when I flopped the nut straight with an open-ended straight flush draw. It was the most monsterous hand I had flopped in a long while. The first player to act bet out. The 2nd player raised. I decided that since the players seemed so confident in their hands, a slow-play was not necessary. I shoved all-in, fully expecting at least one call. They both called. Well, guess what. I ended up hitting my straight flush. But it wasn't good enough! One of my opponents hit a Royal Flush!!

By the time all of the dust had settled, I was left with about 3,400. A few hands later, I got sucked out on by a horrible player to my right who hit a 3 outter on the river and my stack dwindled to 2,200. The very next hand, I got dealt KK. I instantly stuck out a big "I'm-on-tilt" raise and got action from the player who had just sucked me out. I bet out huge on the flop and took down a big pot. The very next hand I get dealt KK again. I play it exactly the same. This time, I get 2 players to follow my betting to the river, where I caught a 3rd King. I shoved the rest of my chips, and took down a nice pot. Back up over 9,000 in chips again. Just like that.

I played my typical tourney game down to the final 2 tables. After a while, a seat opened up, and poker pro Lynette Chan filled the seat. She played very aggressively, stealing pots all over the place. I was sitting a couple of seats to her right. Because of my position against such an overly aggressive player, I was forced to hunker down and switch to my ultra-tight game.

When we made it down to the final 9, our table was moved to the final table. Lynette got sat in seat 6, and as luck would have it, I got sat directly to her left. YES!

Now I was able to loosen up my play a little and get involved in some pots again. By that point, I had set such an image, that Lynette, who typically played very aggressively, actually walked me 3 consecutive times in the blind! I also managed to pull off 2 bluffs against her because of my position and my image.

I managed to knock out a couple of players from the final table, as did Lynette. Soon it was down to 3. My stack took a good hit when I made a call but ended up having to give up the pot to Lynette. The next hand she put out her 3rd consecutive raise. I shoved all-in with A 10, and she called with QQ to knock me out of the tournament in 3rd.

All in all, I had a great time, felt good about my finish, and thoroughly enjoyed played against such a solid player.

congrats on the cash and a game well played. 3 handed i would have played the A10 the same way, just happened to run into a big hand, happens. if you spike an A there prolly would of had a great chance of taking the tourny down.

Sounds like you had a great time for sure! Great game against a very solid player. You gotta be proud of that performance even though you didn't take it down. You did Donkhard proud! Cool

I took some time to look up Lynette Chan because I thought I had heard of her before. She is definitely and up and comer in the poker world. Watch and listen for her name in the future. Here is a link with some info and an interview of her.

TBD, I also played with Lynette Chan in an MTT (Midnight Madness) on May 3rd, and I didn't even realize she was a pro until a friend of mine (who was railing my game at the time) pointed out that her name was in red and that she was in fact a pro. One player was calling her a whore because she would not respond to a 'nh' from him and he continued to trash talk her the entire time she was at our table. Whenever I have a pro at my table I turn off the observer comments because the chat box becomes flooded and bothersome with random idiots asking for $5 or commenting about the hands, etc. Anyway, I sat two to her left and I would imagine she was fairly card dead because she was not playing many hands pre/and or post flop. I wasn't awestruck (in fact I'd never heard of her before) but I did take a good portion of her stack before she was eliminated by another player. When I get home I'll search through my hand history to see exactly what happened. However, I do know that I got eliminated in a set vs set match-up about 100 players after her. Sad

Your whole story was exciting to read from start to finish. At the final table I probably would have made the same call. It must be fun to play with a pro at your table, I can't wait till I get my try with one.

I also think it's awesome that your wife plays too! It's fun to know other couples play together! Hopefully there are more!

Yeah, that whole tourney was alot of fun. Very exciting to play, and I felt good about my finish.

The wife and I do play together as often as possible. She is running multiple businesses and working on her Psych Degree, so we don't always get to play together as often as I'd like. We did go out and play some live poker the other night. I ended the night by spiking a set of 3's against her and 2 other players. The pot got massive, but by the river, the other 2 players had dropped out.

With no one left in the hand, I took advantage of the opportunity to try to pick up a read on my wife. "How big is your set?" I asked. Her face dropped into this "Oh shit, he's got a set... I'm screwed" look. I announce "raise" and shove the rest of my chips in.

She insta-calls, shows me her straight, and takes my chips.

She played me. Oh God, she played me so good!
