Ace on the River

Post by NicolasWSOP on Sat May 16, 2009 11:35 am

Has anyone read Ace on the River by Barry Greenstein? I think it seems very interesting, and I would like to read it. Plus Barry Greenstein seems like a nice guy. Razz

If anyone has read it, post what you thought about it, and your favorite part about it.

Yes, I read it. I like Barry also. "Ace On The River" is an ok book, not one of the best out there. I didn't find it really helpful and it wasn't particularly interesting either. The book I would recommend is "Every Hand Revealed", by Gus Hansen. He comments on every hand he played during the Aussie Millions Tourney, which he won. He took notes while playing and gives his exact thoughts about every hand. Great book. Smile

Good poker book reviews and ace on the river

Post by k9ofspades on Sat Jun 13, 2009 12:18 pm

I find if you go to amazon.com or amazon.ca for us Canadians you get good write ups on the poker books. Go to both for the reviews they are different on the two sites. Also if you order a minimum amount from amazon you get free shipping, but you must go to your own coutry's amazon. I got the 3 Harrington tournament books from them and one worked out to be almost free. I particulary liked the workbook, almost didn't order it, because the title sounded so mundane. You can use the workbook to grade your game if you're interested. I've heard his cash games are a disappointment.

The concensus seems to be that ace on the river is not all that good.

regards Guy

Re: Ace on the River

I've got Ace on the River on Audiobook, had it for a quite some time in fact. I still haven't managed to make it through the whole thing without falling asleep. IMO, it's about as dry as a sand sandwich with no mayo. It's been a while since I've tried again to tackle this thing, but if I remember correctly, it seemed to be more of a memoir than a book about strategy.

I've got to add though, that I'm not trying to knock Barry G. He is a kind, wonderful, and very intelligent person, and an amazing poker player to boot!

If you want some good strategy books, I would recommend:

For Hold 'em - Phil Gordon's Little Green Book (best poker book ever written!)

For all forms of poker - Phil Helmuth's "Play Poker Like The Pros," and Doyle Brunsons "Super Systems 1 & 2"

David Sklanksy's also got some great book on tournament strategy.

I was planning on buying both Super System books as soon as possible. Everyone praises these books so much, lol.

Hey silverjacks,

Do you have the set of Gordons Books in ebook?

I have hard copies of the three but wouldn't mind adding some ebooks to my collection.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Aces on the River

Post by Olddog21 on Sat Sep 26, 2009 8:04 am

Speaking of ace on the river....we ought to take a poll to see if they help your style of play ...or if they hurt more than they help! or !
