a newbies bible of mistakes lol

Post by Guest on Sat Apr 18, 2009 6:47 pm

You play too many hands
You ignore the size of the pot (including chasing with bad pot odds)
You call 2+ small bets cold pre-flop with unpaired offsuit hands (AQo, AJo, QJo, KTo, etc.)
You don't raise AKo,JJ,TT
You don't 3-bet/cap AA,KK,QQ,AK
You fold pretty good hands for 1 bet in big pots
You open the pot for a limp outside of UTG/UTG+1 at a full table.
You think you can push out a flush draw
You play unsuited cards with one big card and a little one
You play suited crap out of position and for more than one bet outside of your blinds
You jam your draws without enough pot equity (callers) and/or with very little fold equity destroying your implied odds in the process.
You raise the flop "for a free card" too often and then proceed to semi-bluff the turn anyway.
You play your blinds too much when facing a raise (particularly heads-up)
You think playing over-cards is your biggest leak
You don't bet the river often enough
You go all-in
You over-value deception against poor players
You under-estimate how much of your profit comes from AA,KK,AK
You under-estimate how much of your profit comes from players that suck worse than you and fail to seek them out.
You under-estimate the impact and diverse forms of luck over the short term.
You under-estimate what long term is. 10,000 hands isn't long-term.
You expect to beat the rake for a healthy rate in any live game smaller than 4/8.

There, I've saved you the $30-$50 it costs to buy half of the Poker Books on the market today

I agree with you there, but it's relative when you think about it a
little bit more. That's based more on the table you're at than
anything. If it's a loose table, if you find you're limping
almost every hand, then you're probably playing too many hands.

Conversely, one mistake you didn't mention is playing too few
hands. If you're at a tight table, you'll probably be making a
mistake by not playing a few more hands than the average at the
table. You're not going to win a lot of chips if you're playing
as tight/tighter than the table you're at.

Overall, you made a lot of really good points, but besides the "Not
playing enough hands", you could also say something like this (as being
a mistake).

Not adjusting your play to the table you're sitting at.

Questions

Post by blackulakingz on Sat May 16, 2009 10:56 pm

I read the post ..understand it...and think its pretty good but tell me something???I have read that u should only play strong hands when u play in cash games.I myself prefer to play hands that aren't always premium and i come out ok. for instance i was up against a guy who had AK and raised the pot to 2500 preflop i happend to have JJ and the bet was a small portion of my chipstack.(by the way i don't considerJJ to be a premium hand preflop)So anyways i call the 2500 and AKJ flops ...and the guy goes all in for like 25k...I call and the turn and river was a 3 and 7 repsectivly (for me).Just wondering..technically was it a smart move to call?

I need to work on the third one. I seem to think that AQ and AJ are always the best hand pre flop, and I will almost never fold them... I probably should though when there are two raises in front of me.

*** EDIT*** When I look back on my post today (7/2/09) I realize how much of a NEWBIE I was wayyyy back in May Razz I fold AJ and AQ much more than I used to.
