Am I crazy?

Post by NicolasWSOP on Sun May 10, 2009 9:55 am

Am I crazy for wanting to be able to make a living from poker, without having a "real" job?

depends.... is your dream realistic or just absurd?
how long are you playing now? what are your results? winnings? sizes of tournaments?
won prizes on sites yet?
and what makes you say youre ready for it?
we all dream of becoming a pro, but its not at all easy....
and i suppose time will tell you if you got any future in it...

with out dreams life would be boring so go for it [when your old enough] until then practice practice and then go practice some more cause in poker just as in life theres a whole lot of variences to overcome and sometimes dreams do come true well maybe .

Now is the perfect time to start accumulating a bank roll and studying many practical theory/strategy books. Keep in mind poker will be a real profession should you choose to earn your income that way, and thus you should treat it as any other job - with dedication, supreme work ethic and a complete understanding of all things Texas Hold 'Em.

I'll give you a comparisons between the similarities between a "real" job and poker as a living. Say you're working at McDonald's part-time. They (like all other employers) have an employee handbook, a specific set of rules and regulations that you are to abide by and follow. You're supposed to show up to work in a timely fashion, conduct yourself appropriately and professionally, produce efficiently and outline a set of goals you wish to achieve (either for that specific work shift, the entire week, month, etc). The same goes for playing poker as a professional. You should show up to work approximately at the same time every day, playing for the same amount of hours. Your focus should solely lie at the task at hand, becoming distracted (talking on the phone, browsing the web, etc.) can cause you to miss a particular "tell" or bit of information from a hand, and since you are playing professionally you need to maximize your potential and strengths at every single opportunity. Slacking off would not be in your best interests playing poker, nor would it be beneficiary to you in an actual work place environment. At McDonald's slacking off might get you a written disciplinary warning...at the tables it might cost you heavily and dearly.

I would recommend finishing college/university before starting down the path to professionalism in poker, as you must understand the possibility of your bank account becoming depleted is very high and you'll need a career and stable income to rely on should you go broke.

I find people are easy to dismiss the dreams of others, but if we always listened to them the boundaries would never be broken and the chain of evolution would stop on a dime. If you really want to make poker your career, I wish you the best of luck and hope you become successful. Although I'm not too sure what the true definition of "successful" entails, I do know people in life are successful because they have a desire to learn and a strong work ethic, utilizing their own knowledge and skills to maximize the opportunities around them.

Food for thought.

*Edit: My 100th post, had to make it worthwhile lol

Well you don't want to open a real account yet until you're legal. I read on another forum someone opened an account at 16 and accumulated quite a bit of winnings and won some prizes, but didn't try to draw his money out until he was 18 and that's where is problems started. The very well know site is investigating him and he probably won't receive the thousands he's won. Study, study, study until you're legal, then it's a real career or job you might call it. If you're going to make this happen when your 21 switch to live poker at casino's.
