I did it. Made the top 100 to get ticket to the tourney this week. What a way to make it too. 104 left dealt q 10 called and flopped a str8t guy bets out at 6800.00, I called because 2 diamonds on board. Turn is diamond and he goes all in I fold don't want to lose all my chips and miss out on the cut. Would anyone else have gone all in on the flop or would you have played the way I did. The guy told me after that he be on 4 card str8t flush draw and caught the flush. Good thing I didnt go all in cause I'm sure he would have gambled and called me. Any comments would be appreciated.

There are definitely 2 different ways to play 2 different types of MTTs properly.

When it comes to the cash MTTs, where the higher you place, the more you win, I believe that the only correct way to play is to play to win. To paraphrase Annie Duke on Celeb Apprentice: There are people who play to last and there are people who play to win. Those who play to last are not as profitable of players as those who play to win. I 110% wholeheartedly agree. I'm sure I have personally busted more MTT bubbles than your average poker player. Of course I don't bust out intentionally (although I made an exception once in a Donkhard game on Pitbull), but I am more than willing to take the risk of busting out before the money if I believe that taking that risk is my best chance of winning the tournament.

But a Satellite game? Well that's a whole different ball game indeed. A while back I was in a big game qualifier. At the time, I was a dealer at a local casino. I had to be at work in a few minutes, and I stayed and played as long as I could, but before I could squeeze into a ticket, I had to leave for work. I handed the controls over to my son, explained the situation, wished him luck, and left for work. When I left we were on the bubble. I had about 2 blinds left, but was still a few seats away from the Big Blind. There were 2 other player at other tables with smaller stacks who were going to hit their blinds before me. My son called me as I was driving to work and told me that he got dealt AK suited and threw it in the muck (the kid is good!). The very next hand he was dealt 2 rags, mucked them, and watched one of the tiny stacks bust out. And we got the ticket. I ended up with a strong final table finish in the big game, and kicked my son down a portion of the winnings for his A+ endgame play in the satellite.

In a satellite tournament, playing to survive is never wrong if it works to get you that ticket. And given the hand you were up against, you would have been hard pressed to find any player who would have mucked that many outs against you even if you had shoved all-in. Kudos to you on taking the circumstances into consideration and playing your hand well in that scenario.

You did the right thing. I folded pocket aces ones when two guys went all in and i was only two people away from getting a ticket. One of the guys busted out the other and a hand later a guy on another table was busted out so i got what i wanted.

Absolutely the right thing. If your playing a qualifier.... QUALIFY! Even if you had AA and was in the BB and it came to you and you checked and the flop came A,K,K... you should fold that hand rather than call any raise. Someone has K,K and ur out and all the time and effort you put into it would be down the drain. When you know you have enough chips to make it, don't do the unwise and call anything. just survive and then play in the final. I've seen it time and time again players in the Doyles Feeder will bet like there is no tomorrow and lose all their chips and miss qualifying when they had it made by just folding down to make it.

Learned my lesson on a PokerStars freeroll qualifier. Had more than enough chips and was in 54th pos out of 104 left(top 99 to qualify). Got A,K... flop came A,A,K.. got most of my chips in.. turn came 6.. put all my chips in .... river came 6... yep me and another player who had K,K got beat by the chip leader who had 6,6! Never again! lol!
