Football Season! Empty Football Season!

Post by The Big Donk Mon Aug 04, 2008 3:02 pm

Football season is on it's way. Preseason kicked off yesterday in Canton. Who took the easy money against Indy last night? Well, The Big Donk did, that's for sure. Peyton Manning's not playing? I don't care if they're playing the Washington Wizards, my money's going against the Colts. O.K., so Manning wasn't the only factor, but it was a biggie. The fact that Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, and Marvin Harrison, amongst others were sitting this one out made it an easy bet against Indianapolis.

Now I know that sounds pretty weak coming after the fact, sort of like that guy who says "I knew there was going to be an earthquake" right after the earthquake hits, but it is the truth about the where and the why I put my money.

And as always, 25% of my winnings went into my poker bankroll.

Now I don't do very much betting in the preseason, as these games tend to more unpredictable than most, but some chances are just to good to pass up.

So here's how I'm going to boost my poker bankroll a little further during the football preseason:

My next wager is on Green Bay to beat the Bengals. Now 1st you've got to understand that I am a 49er fan, and therefore naturally hate the Cowboys and the Packers. O.K. so I don't really hate them, they are excellent rivals, but I love to see them lose. So it's got to take something big for me to put money on either of those teams.

And here's the biggie(s):

1. Favre's return.
2. Mike McCarthy says, and I quote, "Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers."
which leads us to
3. Favre's not going to just roll over and volunteer to keep the bench warm for Rodgers. That means that throughout the 1st half, Green Bay will have 2 talented quarterbacks doing everything they can to put as many points as possible on the board and secure the starting job. For 2 series we'll see the young Rodgers, who is undefeated in his starts, working his @$$ off to prove he deserves the role of Starting QB. Next, enter the 17 year vet, the man who's never missed a start in his life. 100+ degree fevers, IV's, concussions, the death of his father, broken bones in his throwing hand, and everything else the sport has thrown at him has not been able to keep him from taking the 1st snap, every day of his life. But unless he can seriously outshine Rodgers, he won't be taking that 1st snap opening day. There's no way Favre is ok with that scenario. This should all add up to a pretty high scoring 1st half for the Pack.
4. Back to McCarthy. This man is a very defensive minded coach, who prefers to win by the D. And with his 2 big QB's playing "I-can-get-the-skin-in-the-endzone-more-than-you," McCarthy's focus will be able to easily remain on the defense, which equates to a low scoring affair for the cats.

GB can easily win this one by 14+, but then again, big spreads scare the bejesus out of me, so If Green Bay's favored by more than 6.5, I'll be taking the moneyline. Of course if they've got Cincinnati favored to win this one, I'll put my house and my kinds on the spread. We'll wait and see what the odds look like when they hit the market.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but go Green Bay!

The latest update from Vegas looks like this.

Green Bay favored. 3 points on the spread for -110.

Or you can hit Wynn if you happen to be in Vegas and get a bet without the spread for -155.

For 3 points, I will without a doubt go with the spread.

Go Packers! Rolling Eyes
